Throughout history, kings have varied their clothes according to the effect they wanted to create. This drawing shows Louis IX, king of France from 1226 to 1270, as a warrior and judge. He is wearing armour, a coat of mail, and a long tunic. The embroidered fleur-de-lis (lily) and ermine collar on his coat were the symbols of French royalty. The sword recalled his numerous military expeditions during the Crusades. Finally, the hand of justice worn on his belt represented the king's role as judge.
